The New Way to Learn Jazz Violin

Are you interested in learning how to improvise and/or play popular jazz tunes on the violin? If so, keep reading.

I’m so happy to introduce my friend, Eva Slongo. Eva is an experienced jazz musician and a fantastic teacher. She currently performs all over Europe and has created a debut jazz album.

As you know, I am a classically trained musician and jazz is not my specialty (to say the least!). However, I know that many students are interested in broadening their horizons and expanding to other genres besides classical.

Eva currently offers two amazing jazz courses: 111 Mini Jazz Tutorials and The New Way to Learn Jazz Violin.

In 111 Mini Jazz Tutorials, you’ll learn hundreds of common jazz licks and how to learn or improve your jazz improvisation skills. This course includes both video and written explanations of each tutorial. You can follow the tutorials in the order that Eva has put them in, or you can pick and choose which ones to learn as you see fit.

In The New Way to Learn Jazz Violin, you’ll learn all of the ins and outs of playing jazz at a high level, including how to create jazz melodies from scratch, jazz bow strokes, popular jazz tunes, and so much more.

Here are three free lessons from The New Way to Learn Jazz Violin. Enter Eva Slongo!

1. RIGHT HAND TECHNIQUE

Here is a video (one of the first of the method) where I show you in detail the right hand technique we use in jazz violin. This video is accompanied by an article which also explains why we use this technique, and also a link to the bowing techniques used by Stéphane grappelli and Didier Lockwood. It may sound pretty basic, but it's so important that I really want to explain it in detail in this article!

2. 7 EXERCISES TO LEARN THE SWING FEEL

Again, the swing is of utmost importance. It really is something to feel from inside your body, but it is not natural for everyone! It was not for me when I started studying jazz ... So, I had to find tricks and exercises to practice the swing feeling! It takes time and patience ... Also, I advise you to listen to a lot of swing and jazz music if you want to swing ...

This course should help you, because I offer different progressive exercises. You may be more comfortable with some than with others: do not hesitate to follow your instincts and go in the direction that best suits you! The idea is really to find a way to help you feel the swing: if an exercise suits you well and you feel the swing is coming, keep with it!

3. ÉTUDE ON I CAN'T GIVE YOU ANYTHING BUT LOVE

This etude is part of the nine final etudes of my method: if you go through them gradually, at the end, you will start to improvise like I play in this etude! So, you can see how my method works! Of course, the best is to go through the whole progressive process of the method and then learn the etudes, but you can already start to study this one, to see where you are.

I improvised over the chord changes of this tune, then I transcribed my solo onto sheet music, precisely copying the bowings, fingering and ornaments!
